Mosque Cathedral in Córdoba - Practical FAQs.

Here’s a straightforward guide addressing the most common questions visitors have about the iconic Mezquita-Cathedral in Córdoba.

  • Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

No, there’s no need to buy tickets in advance. You can purchase them on-site at the Patio de los Naranjos or online at the official Mezquita site. Tickets are €13.00 p.p.

However - if you are going to buy tickets in person - to avoid long lines, it’s best to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the crowds thin out.

  • What is the best time to visit?

Early mornings at 10:30am are ideal when it’s generally less crowded. Avoid visiting between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM when the site is busiest.

That said, the size of La Mezquita is huge, so once you get inside you may have to wait a smidge to get just the right pic, but you'll not feel too crowded..

On Sundays, note that the site closes from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM for mass.

  • What about FREE tickets. When is that?

From 8:30 to 9:30 AM daily, entry to the Mosque Cathedral is free. While the lineups - at the side door and the main entrance - may seem long, it moves along and the crowd disperses quickly into the large building giving you plenty of opportunity to check things out.

Group visits are not allowed at this time, making it nice and tranquil inside.

Note: the cathedral is off limits during this time. To view this and the Saint Teresa Chapel with its Treasure, you will have to buy a ticket.

  • When are open hours?

Mosque Cathedral:

From 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM with the exception of Sundays.

Bell Tower:

From 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

Note: given the narrow staircase, visitors are allowed up in intervals. It moves along quickly though.

If you want to enjoy a longer view of the Quadalqivir River and the top of the Mosque Cathedral visit the patio of the Marisa Hotel across La Mezquita at the north end. Have a coffee or a drink and just relax! It opens at 1:30 PM.

  • When do the bells ring?

The smaller bells at the top of the Bell Tower ring daily at 9:30 AM with the exception of Sunday when the larger bells ring between 11:45 AM and 12:00 PM depending on the day and the type of mass.

Note: I have not seen the massive bells ring yet although that doesn't mean they don't. I'll have to check with my Córdoba-born neighbour on that one!

  • Is there a dress code?

Unofficially, both men and women are sort of expected to be kind of clothed not-too-naked - as in have their shoulders and knees covered - as many Spanish people still do as a sign of respect.

While enforcement is completely relaxed, guards do ask men to remove hats or caps, reflecting traditional Catholic customs.

In reality, many visitors dress quite casually, so don’t be surprised to see more scruffy attire.

  • Do I need a passport to enter?

No, you do not need a passport or any form of ID to enter.

Your bag will be checked by a guard when you enter La Mezquita (not like airport control, so yes, you can bring water or whatever non-dangerous food or other items).

  • Are there discounts available?

Discounts and free entry apply only to specific groups, such as residents of Córdoba and those with disabilities.

Unfortunately, age-based discounts for kids or seniors are not offered.

Visiting the Mezquita-Cathedral is a memorable experience, and knowing these key details will help you make the most of it.

Whether you’re coming for the architecture, history, or spiritual significance, it’s worth planning ahead for a smoother, more enjoyable visit.
